OVERVIEW

O3 is a giant 24/7 café brand built around community, self-expression, and a distinct visual world; including a cast of collectible oyster characters that live inside their app. Each oyster has its own personality, rarity, and lore, forming a key part of how O3 expresses its identity to users.

As part of Command Play Studio, I was brought in to animate O3's oyster characters in Rive, translating each character's unique personality into motion for use in the app and potential AR activations on physical cups.

THE BRIEF

O3 wanted to bring their static oyster illustrations to life with personality-driven animations, no standardisation, no master rig. Each of the 100 characters needed to feel individually crafted, with movement that amplified their distinct traits: a rebellious character that bucks and resists, a melancholic cat with slow dripping droplets, a fish out of water with frantic bubbles. The benchmark was Discord-style delight, but more personal and more alive.

Closing the Loop

Every animation had to serve two goals at once: feel delightful enough to make users want to collect, and stay true enough to each character's personality that O3's highly involved creative team — who are deeply protective of their brand culture — would immediately recognise their oysters in motion.
